THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY
Although the mission and strategy of Youth Upliftment International is to educate youth as a mechanism of turning the tide on poverty, the reality is, Y.U.I. is very intertwined with the surrounding community.
This is a good thing, the sense of community is very strong and the old adage of "it takes a village…." is alive and well here. The flip side of strong community, is that when tragedy strikes some, the whole village feels it.
And tragedy has struck.
One of our former students' home, as well as some of the surrounding houses (shacks) have burned down.
Everyone is thanking God for being alive, but they are left with absolutely nothing.
In video: Kelly speaking about the damage and loss.
Right now we are in the emergency phase as all the families have nothing. After that we will focus on the long term. Maria, one of the fire victims, sells food out of her home. So not only has she lost her home, she has also lost her income.
In videos: Kelly and Maria. Kelly speaks about Maria's impact on his life and how she needs help.
